how do multiple research centers work together? I've thought of expanding my RCs to make the research faster, but is it worth it? What about buying another of the same RCs?

One research can only be researched in one RC at the same time.

If you expand the RC the time for the research get discreased.

I have heard of people owning two of the same kind of RC. Expand one while the other is doing research. I think you'd want to wait until you have already specialized a lot in one product or a few related products, with several farms/factories/stores.

I'm not certain but I believe the idea behind multiple research centers of the same type is so that you can research all or part of a production chain at the same time.

For example. A person making textiles might have two cattle and plant RCs so that they can research seeds quality and cotton quality continuously, without interruption.

Like Azer pointed out. Having two RC-centers per product is very important if you are looking for high end products. For instanse being i the oilindustry with only one RC-center will cause you to loose out on a lot of potential profit.
