Minor Suggestion - Massively Helpful Result

Post by Guest » 24.11.2007, 06:25

Hey everyone,

Dave here :) As a newer player (3 weeks), I must say I really like this game concept... so cool to see more business themed games, as opposed to another war/fighting game.

My suggestion would help both new players and experienced pro's as they expand their portfolios - Don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not, sorry for the repost if it has.

On the Warehouse page - Say you have some cattle for example... It would be very helpful if I could roll my mouse over the picture of the cattle to see a list of what types of businesses needed cattle to produce whatever it is they produce.

This would be very helpful in determining market demands & make it much easier for ALL players to make wiser decisions in general

I realize there's a page that posts supply & demand stats, but that seems to relate more to selling via your own store....not the ever changing players market, as far as I can tell.

Either way, that would be very helpful, relatively easy to code & probably would take just a few hours to do.

Thank you in advance for considering & thanks for making a cool game for all us business junkies!

All of us "business junkies" already have 20 spreadsheets that contain this information somewhere in them. Is it really that hard to look through the "Help" area for a couple minutes to find this information out? Have people really gotten that lazy these days?

It's a good idea only for new players. More experienced ones very good know, how to handle their products. I think the game would be too easy then, i think that every player have to learn how to use the game and basics of trading.

Azer......I'm guessing you aren't to keen on customer service....finding ways to make things easier for customers so they use your business more then the competitor down the street.

It's fine to have a difference of opinions, however, the way you answer sounds as if your a very self-centered person that could care less about the opinions of others... I noticed that tone in your other post to me as well.

Too each their own, just my 2 cents.

First of all, welcome on board ! Always nice to see new people join in =)

The suggestion is interesting in the sense that, so far, there is no "forward" product listing in the game. There is a "backwards" listing, in the help section, where if you have a given product, you can go back and trace which ingredients its making required. But if you have a given start product, you can't search anywhere if there are further transformations available from there, let alone, get their complete list. Your only option is to go yourself through the whole product list, and one after the other, check if they require your product as an ingredient.

That doesn't mean forward listing is entirely inexistent in the Kapilands community. GoldenEye, for example, translated a very neat flowchart that can be used for this purpose.

-----

There is a lot to learn in the game when you start. I'm afraid that dumping even more info onto starters and making it popup out of everywhere they lay the mouse, might be more overwhelming than helpful. I mean, it would be helpful to have a place to find that info when you are looking for it, yes. But invasive help might do more harm than good, and just confuse starters even more.
So even if a "forward listing" of the product chain is to be introduced somewhere in the game, I'm not convinced that the warehouse is the best place for it (eventhough I totally understand the original idea of showing only "relevant" product chains, since they'd be based only on products you already own. In the newbie situation of "ok, I've got this apple sitting here, now what ?", a mouseover popup would be immediate help. In any other situation though, it would be immediate headaches, and likely terribly annoying after the 6th month).

-----

Also, I'd like to point out that a few key products are involved in way too many chains to be listed "on the same level" as others. Power, water, corn and seeds come to mind immediately, in that category. I mean, they could be listed, the info would be accurate. But it would be irrelevant and would not contribute to grasping a forward listing and the product chains of the game. On the contrary, they split into so many chains, that the list would be confusing and counter-productive.

-----

While I still don't know by heart which quantities are to be used, I have a fairly good idea now of which products requires which sub-products. I can also say, without checking the help, which products (or at least, family of products) you can make out of a given sub-product, and I have a good understanding of the different product chains. This understanding and knowledge is, in my opinion, a really nice milestone of Kapilands gaming experience.
No matter how hard you try to learn each individual product's recipe by heart, it won't come to you that way. The ability to mentally link them and envision the different product chains of the game is something that truely goes further than that. It only comes with time, and experience with the game. It doesn't make a good player out of you, but neither does it require you to be a talented super-player, or a god. Everyone eventually manages and reaches that landmark. And I'm sure many get a lot of pride from reaching it; probably moreso if it took them longer.

Can it be made easier to reach that milestone ? Yes, of course.

Would making it easier to reach, also belittle the pleasure and pride of that achievement ? Yes, of course.

Is it desirable to make it easier ? Maybe, but not neccesarly so.

That wouldn't be very helpful because you should know what you produce goes to what before you produce it. Because it is better to plan things out.

How could this really help??? Because you usually know what most the items do that you deal with daily...

True. The only possible use of this idea is to look at you mistakes and wqhack yourself on your own head and probably shout out: DOH!

It's an interesting idea. The problem you want to avoid is cluttering up with too much "help."

I can see why it might be useful to a newer player. (Although, as zorrak points out, if you have products in your warehouse and don't know what they're useful for then you're already in trouble. :))

On the other hand, once you've been playing for a bit you know your business line and have a pretty good idea about others. After that this is just clutter built into a warehouse page that is already pretty busy.

True. It going to be difficult to manage the warehouse page with popup frames all over the place.

Just think of the bandwith problems people might have with it.

BearsFan, my job is all about pleasing costumers. However, it also requires me to make them think why they want something done that way.

All right with warehouse.
But THIS KIND OF INFORMATION is definitly needed.
It can be placed in HELP file.
Now it's written where to sell a product, but for semi products (unsellable) there's no information for what they are good for.
Of course you can browser all other products to find that information but its CUMBERSOME FOR NEWBIE (as I am).

In fairness to "old" players, guess it's only fair that we to must figure this stuff out and make spreadsheets / notes to keep track of it all.

NOTE to Azer:
I apologize for my rude comments to you in my previous post.... no excuse for them - Sorry.

:D Glad you agree...

If you go to the GUIDE TO ALL GUIDES section...there are many guides that help you organize spreadhseets and help you find the best way to sell, buy, research etc.
