Funny? yes Evil? yes

I was ~12 yo when the Charles/Diana romance started. She was sooooo good looking. I would have had her as my queen any day. King Charles? Well maybe one day. QEII is going to live as long as her mother did I think and good on her.

Yes I'm quite irreverant when it comes to comedy. It's not that I din't like Diana - quite the contrary. In fact I have an honorary Princess Di cell phone to celebrate her. It's a pretty good phone, though it tends to die when going through tunnels ...

Actually though I don't even mean to pick on poor Diana. My disdain is for the celebrities who use her as an excuse to get attention. "In tribute to Princess Diana, I'm going to sing." Really Tom Jones? Wow, that's quite a change from what you've done every day for 147 years now. You took time out from singing to a hundred octogenarians in Las Vegas, so you could sing to millions of people worldwide? Touching.

What I'm saying is I don't really care about any of those people, if I wanted to see / hear them I would. Diana coming back however, now that's an event!

(Oh look what you did, I'm on a rant now.)

And it's not just the celebs, they can't pander to the public without a public to pander too. It started getting me really steamed a few years ago here in the US when every 2 minutes there was a "9/11 benefit concert." And I'd have to hear people saying "Oh, Bruce Springsteen did a benefit to build new doghouses for the pets of the children of the widows of the firemen who were traumatized watching the towers fall on television. And it was great, I'm so glad I was able to help."

No, you're glad you got to see a concert. Which knowing you, you would have done anyway. If you really cared you'd give money without wanting something in return, like I did. In fact the way I see it, you owe me a dance. Go on, I'm waiting.

Argh. All of which is just an extention of all that "walkathon" nonsense. Oh, a walk-a-thon to cure cancer? Great! I'll call up the scientists and tell them they can stop wasting time with research, we have walking on the case! I remember when Jonas Salk invented the polio vaccine by walking around the elementary school 4 times. And wearing a ribbon.

You want a walk-a-thon? How about a get-a-job-a-thon. How about a do-something-constructive-and-actually-earn-money-instead-of-wasting-your-time-on-feel-good-busywork ... um ... -a-thon. You know it's one thing when you're 5 years old and can't actually do anything , so your Mom gives you some silly task to make you feel like you're helping. But these are grownups now, and it has become such an event that part of the money raised goes to buy t-shirts to give back to the walkers so they can walk around (freelance) bragging about the day they pretended to help.

So many walkathons and pink ribbons it's hard to believe we haven't cured that pesky cancer yet. I'm going to spin in my chair 3 times after this post, maybe that will help. But at least those are low-key affairs, relatively speaking. This "Concert for Diana" was huge! The press has just gone crazy covering it. Which is truly ironic when you consider the role of the paparazzi 10 years ago. If they wanted to remember Diana, they could spend the day not taking pictures of celebrities. Just one day. I promise you'll still remember what they look like 2 days later.

Ick. OK, rant over. I am glad Duchess Sarah Ferguson was able to turn out. Who knew she was such a good singer?
