Oh yeah. I mean ... look, it's something people want to do. Now the more they do it, the more they want to do it (i.e. addiction). But no one's being forced to smoke.

I think smoking is dumb for several reasons; I never had any interest in cigarrettes. But if the customer gets what they want, and the manufacturer gets what they want, and the farmer and the retailer and the advertisers get what they want, then frankly who am I to get in between them just because "I know better"?

I feel sorry for the bar tenders. In Australia it is now illegal to smoke within a certain distance (I think it's 4 meters) of the bar. I have heard in some other countries laws requiring similar behavior.

If passive smokers what to smoke they will buy their own. :D

It's interesting to see that this kind of facism has infected so many nations. Before the rule was simple. If you want to smoke go to an establishment that allows it. If you don't want to be around smoke then go to a non-smoking establishment. Choice. A sort of old-fashioned responsibility for your own freaken actions. But that is'nt good enough nowadays. It seems that now what is important is to tell people who do things you don't what they can and cannot do and where and when.
Odd enough some of the businessess it hurts the worst are the non-smoking establishments. Because they used to be able to market on this status. And get a fairly exclusive regular clientell who did'nt want to be around smokers. Of course since the nanny state stepped in and said that everywhere has to be non-smoking there's no reason to go out of your way to spend money there. Socially of course it has an impact. I was a polite smoker. Now that you little nazis decided to try and throw me out of my favorite resturaunts and such whenever and wherever I can legally smoke I try to blow as much second hand in your faces as possible. You've already made it clear that you have no respect for my rights. Why should I respect yours?

Don't be silly. Don't you know average citizens aren't qualified to make their own decisions?

Say gan do you drive? Auto accidents kill more than any other non-illness fatality.
Are you a virgin? AIDS.
Do you drink?
Are you overweight? Obeisity takes as many years off of your life as smoking.

People have bad habits. You, me, everyone. There is a difference between having this general awareness of the human condition and forcing others to behave the way you happen to think is best.

Interesting choice of quotes, since anti-smoking advocates have used this very phrase in regard to second-hand smoke to get much of this legislation approved.

I'm just saying.

In my experience, different cultures have different definitions of personal space. I would think that anyones right to swing there fists ends about 1 foot from my face. If they displayed aggressive behavior any closer I would instinctively react.

Action leads to reaction. It is good to stay on one's toes but blood pressure requires certain behaviors within a culture to enable the culture to grow.

So it all comes down to personal space and cultural behavior, alienation and acceptance. If someones behavior doesn't "fit" into their present culture they become alienated by that culture.

I suppose this is why elephants and tigers don't herd together.

The pub sort of looks like the island a bit... or maybe it's the other way around. The island (being an extinct volcano) has obviously stopped smoking, whereas the pub hasn't. :D It all fits.
But if the customer gets what they want
Have you ever done any reading about the way "Public Relations" was born? If I remember correctly, PR assumes that the customer doesn't know what they want. Therefore, if you tell the customer what they want (subliminally) then they will by retail and support the manufacture.
