For beginners right now make steel you can easily sell it for 134, water you can probably get .15 when it only cost .03 with the right buildings. Wardrobes seem to be big right now but not many beginners can get into this market due to high research now.

my advise is to start with plantations if u are on R1.
u earn a lot and u can build 8 plantations instead of those 2 mines or wells.profit from 8plantations > profit from 2 mines/wells.

when i started i went into steel and it was well worth it :P but for the past few days iv been trying to go into wardrobes but guess what its to damn hard and now im trying to sell my 11buildings and my rubbishy reasearches to unsuspecting n00bs :P oh yeah anyone wanna buy 3plantations and Q5 reasearch wardrobes XD lol

my point exactly i had to make 11buildings to become self sufficient making about 200-400 wardrobes a day so unless you have a lot of cash spare dont try wardrobes

I'm good, thanks. I've moved past importing to vertical integration of power and all the materials I need to expand.

I think chemicals would be a cool idea for a new person. Make a few mines and factories (1/1 ratio) and research chemicals and minerals. I think it would be nice, and i would be willing to support a new player with high prices :)
