but keep in mind if it takes you 5 minutes to sell but 5 hours to make, selling it faster doesn't really help you too much.

I'd say that you should go with steel. There's never going to be a loss in market demand for steel: It's needed for upgrades, cars, wardrobes, and products I don't really know.

For me, since I have to buy a lot of my stuff off the market, it costs me $80 to make 1 steel, and $125 to sell it, which makes me $45 profit. Since I have a mine, and produce coal in quantities of 1000, I have to pay about:

.09 (Manufacturing) + 0.08 * 10kwH (Power) + 0.08 * 7L (Water)= 1.69 Caps

And you sell this for 8 caps.

Profit:

8.00-1.69 = 6.31 caps

Since 1 Mine produces 100 coal in an hour:

100 coal: 631 caps of profit

Steel:

Steel is a hard product to manufacture, but it's worth it:

2kg * 10.00 (Iron) + 5kg * 8.00 (Coal) + 0.5 * 18.00 (Chemicals) + 200kwH * .08 (Power) = 85 caps

Since I sell it at 125....

125-85=40 caps of profit

And since one factory produces 18 steel in about an hour:

40*18=720 caps of profit

The best way to make money, is to do competition products, especially if they are simple. You will make the most money that way, even if you blow up the buildings after the contest

Yes, you're right, but people do need Q0 steel in order to build buildings for the competitions.
