Why would one produce quartz?

i don't want to make big calculations, because this is so obvious

Quartz, minerals, coal cost the same to produce and they have same production rates, you can include iron ore too, but it is slightly more expansive

market status:

Minerals: one page of offers, cheapest for 11.40 but then it rises to 20+ (i don't think the 20+ will sell quicky, but there is not much of the cheaper ones)

Coal: 4 pages of offers, but this market moves quicky, cheapest offer @ 9.25c and then many offers @ 10c

:!: :!: :!: Quartz :!: :!: :!:

3 pages of offers, first page ends @ 5c :?: :!:

cheapest offer is 2c, and there are huge amounts of quartz for lower than 6c

now, why would you produce something that you can sell for 2-3c, if you can produce something else with the same expenses in the same building that you can sell for 10c ?

Don't look to much at market prices. They change very often. Just yesterday I bought 10k minerals for 7.00 (great deal). Minerals prices usualy vary between 8,5-12, coal prices 9-13, iron 9-13 and quartz 3-6. The price is low because noone needs that much quartz. It's needed in such small amounts that you can buy higher quality for a much higher price than you would with q0. It's just one of those products which have to be developed to higher level to make profit (like gold, silver, diamonds, cattle...)
I'll give you an example on my production of wood. To make 1 piece of wood Ineed 50 water, 50 power and 1 seed. Seeds are only twice as expensiv as power and water but I need just one so I can afford to buy higher quality for much higher price than q0 (q0 seed is 0.18-0.22, q17 is 3.00).
There are a lot of products that make much less profit than others but when you make higher quality you have less competition and the prices go up.
As for why would anyone sell q0 quartz, I don't know. I guess they are just people with little game expirience or ones that are awful with maths.

i only used market prices to show some numbers, i was talking especially about q0 and it's really strange that people produce such big amounts of it

and to the experienco of people: there are quite big companies selling huge amounts of quartz, just check it, you will see some have 40M in fixed assets

And what shocks me is that it's not a temporary thing. People have been selling quartz that low ever since the contest almost 2 months ago.
