mostly there is a pattern in the contests... also if there isn't... It could be a good thing to keep the building. Just expand it... Don't do a 1000m2 at once, but pout in on expansion for 1 or 2 days... and again... and again. Just as long till there is a new contest for one of the products producing in this building...
But as "tamaratjuh87" mentioned... You just have to choose for yourself...
I did the same with a fruit plantation... >>> now 14000m2... <<<

It's rare that a contest uses the same building twice in a row. Add to that the empty weeks between contests, and you're likely hurting yourself between runs.
At the most conservative, here is what I would do: After a contest ends, advertise the buildings for sale (at a fairly cheap price) to see if you get any takers. Do that until the day the next contest starts. Then if the building isn't used again, sell it immediately.
Even that is likely to be holding it uselessly for a while. Especially if you're talking about smaller buildings 20m to 100m and smaller companies (below Manager). You sell for 75% of what you paid. (Let's say 50% after building materials.)
That means suppose you have a couple buildings you spent 1m caps for (including steel, etc). You sell them back for 500k caps. Build something new with it, and within 2 weeks you've earned an extra 500k at your own business. Compare that to where you would be if the buildings had sat empty (or in your non-main business) earning you nothing.
So I say sell, dump them as soon as possible. But then I've never been a major contest player. You'd have to ask them specifically what their strategies are.

i use my food factory to produce items for special buildings. at present i can't produce enough Q0 candy to satisfy demand. if you want to hang onto the building for future contests then producing special building items is an option AND you dont need research. when the next contest starts you can then switch the building to the contest product for the duration of the contest.
options for food factory that players will buy for special buildings are bread, flour, sugar, biscuits, cocoa powder, candy and candy bars.
unlike quests these items repeat so for each level players reach that require these items the amount required will increase by 2000.
eg kindergarten
20m2 requires 500 milk, 500 cocoa powder, 500 candy, 500 candy bars
100m2 requires 2500 milk, 2500 cocoa powder, 2500 candy, 2500 candy bars
and so on.
