Production Costing Help? what do people think?
Hi,
I've been messing with google spreadsheets tonight devloping something which may be of use to people.
This is a work in progress. I'm tired now, so please forgive any mistakes or if any of these links don't work.
The first link shows how the spreadsheet looks as a web page. You can not alter any values, but it could be useful if the abousltey minimum values were inputed. This could help people avoid being accused of cheating by buying something too cheaply on the market. Although another solution to that problem would be better, will have to go post in that thread.

This next link is to a google help page, and if I've read it correctly the link that follows it should allow you to download the spreadsheet to use in your desktop spreadsheet or if you've a google docs & spreadsheet account to open and manuiplate it there.

Please tell me what you think? Is it a project worth completing, or prehaps you would like to help complete it.

Good job.
If you wonna do this also for other buildings I can give you the relevant figures (the production costs of every building and product)
And perhaps you can also integrate the different areas. For the plantations it is not so important, because everybody builds them in Africa. But for factories... It's just an idea
But once again: great work

Looks great. Have you heard of KapiTools. It is very similar to what you are trying to do, but it is php based and only exists in German right now. They are working on an English translation though, so I thought you would want to know. With a little translation, you can figure out most of the numbers even from the German version though.
One other thing you might consider on the spreadsheet is the cost if you produce the raw materials(i.e. water and power) yourself. The cost of corn, for instance, would be reduced to less than 0.40 per unit of q0 corn. I have an Excel worksheet with these values in them and it has been a very useful tool to help me decide whether to buy the raw materials or produce them myself. Especially since the reduced corn production cost can significantly lower the unit price of things like cattle and leather.
But, overall, what you have created looks very nice.

Thanks for all the Feedback.
If you could provide me with that info Dwarf, would be great, not sure on time frame for me converting that info into pages, but would 1 or 2 buildings added per day.
I hadn't realised there was a difference depending on the area, Is it just the production cost that changes?(as this is only thing not on help file for producing products) I think it would be simple enough to add 3 sheets per page, one for each area. Or I could Colour those boxes, saying enter costs per area.
I hadn't heard of Kapitools. Is there any chance someone could provide me with a link please. I have some very basic german, and you say most people should be able to figure it out, so would be nice to take a look. I may even be able to help a little with the translation if the people translating need any help. I have coded in past, so editing code wouldn't be a problem.
I don't know whether you'll beleieve me or not, but after working on this and putting the post here. I had come to the conclusion that it could also be done as a web page. But one of the reasons for doing via googles docs and spreadsheets is i think it will help boost the google ranking for kapilands and thus attract more new players. I had put my referal link of the instructions page, just in case someone found it and didn't know what kapilands was, but if i'm being honest the proper linking and proper instructions page would be completed towards the end of the creation. As more and more gets added there would be more and more chance of people from here vistiting the link which is what would increase the main rankings as it only links back to kapi.
Now as this could turn into a co-operative project, it may not be fair for me to use my referal link. I don't know if the staff do this or not, but maybe there is a special link that could be given that would reward those players who helped out rather than just one player.
The real question I suppose is whether or not there will be any place for it alongside the english version of kapitools.
Antares, I don't know how much producing power/water myself would cost, but this is a question I would really need answered by other players.
What is the starting figure i should put in the Red boxes. Should it be the mininum you can produce for(which I don't know the answer), or the price the NPC company sells for on the market. This is the default value of the spreadshhet, and only those using the spreadsheet themselves, either downloaded to use in there desktop spreedsheat or using google docs and spreadsheets. Can alter those values so you can see how it affects the values.
Is there any chance of uploading your spreadsheet into google doc & spreadsheets so we can see how it works, and possibly convert that for web apperance or add extra things to what I'm devloping.
once again thanks all for the feedback

Here's the link for kapitools (it is also the first item if you do a google search).
KapiTools
It looks like there are many other parts to the page, but I don't even know what they are. The specific page I linked to is the one that tabulates all production costs (not including the raw materials. I'm sure some of the other tabs do more with the raw materials.
As for what affects the production costs, area is important. Generally, green areas have lower production costs and lower production rates. So the tradeoff is rate vs cost for producing facilities. Also, buildings always cost more in red than in green. For sales buildings, this building cost is the only tradeoff since red areas have higher salaries and inhabitants are willing to pay higher prices. Also, the quality of an item will affect it production cost. Your level in the game will affect your production rates (it gets slower as you get higher levels) but not your costs. So there are several things to consider.
I too have a spreadsheet, but it is probably too messy for others to understand and not well organized. It basically calculates the cost for each of my raw and intermediate materials and then determines my profit per unit time for selling my final product in my stores so that I can determine what price to sell at.

My 3.25 floppy on this computer is not working or I'd be happy to send you my spreadsheet from my other computer where I made it. Power was calculated to be 0.02 per unit and water was calculated to be 0.03 per unit. I added new products based upon my production of those in my current game. Water costs were based upon Saudi Arabian production costs of 0.02 plus .01 per unit for the power. Power used in water production was based upon a market price of 0.10 per unit. Power in my power plant in Mali was based upon the production cost of 0.01 per unit. If I produce my own power to make the water, it would cost me about 0.021 per unit of water(.02 in production costs plus .01 per 10 power). I hope I am making this clear enough. If not, let me know. Hope this helps.
