I am giving the answer again but making it very simple:

Build plantations in: Green (NOT yellow or red)
Build Power Plants in: Red (Think LONG TERM as this is a long term game. The power will get to, and stay at, .25 or higher sometime in the future.)

Don't produce your own power or water unless that is ALL you produce. (Buy the side products and make the main products.)

Even at .25 selling power plants is easy and gives a nice profit.
Build them in green and expand them to a decent level and sell them when you want to change production.

You can easily sell green PP's above building cost and gain some cash to build other buildings.
If you want to think long term, not many people want to be a power producer forever.

Check the R1 green power plant pricing on the market.
People don't mind paying up to 100M each 1000m.

Ofcourse Red ones can be sold at even higher rates per 1000m, but they cost more to build and that is difficult regarding the higher construction cost and smaller profit at lower power price levels.
I'm currently swapping from power plants to other buildings on R2 and they did get sold very well at a great profit :)
Right now however the market gets flooded a bit :?
Still, the plants get more expensive when you continue expanding them, however right now i'm more busy expanding other buildings instead of the power plants.
