I seem to remember when I did the tutorial that I was able to research the items on my production list. I don't remember having any RC buildings though. How did that happen as it's not happening now?

As part of the tutorial, you had a Cattle & Plant RC. If you didn't start over and didn't sell it, you still have it. Click on Research in the row of links at the top. Then click on the RC to set your research.

Am I missing a command to transfer the researched knowledge to my production facilites?
I've just started and have researched seeds and pears a couple times but when I produce the quality is still 0. Am I missing something?

You need to set each of your buildings quality level.
1. Select your building.
2. Under
Quality level: select
edit.
3. Type 127 (the highest possible research level) in the area in the red box. Then select
execute to set the quality level.
Your quality is now set. You will be able to make up to the highest quality of that product using research and other higher level materials.

Just remember that if you ever want to produce lower quality goods, you have to switch production quality back down before you start. For example, I sometimes use my plantation to produce q0 wood (which is just as good as high quality wood for the purpose of building construction). I switch often enough, so I worry that I will forget to check quality before I start producing.

But why would you produce the lower quality? I don't know if I am wrong but my Q3 oil takes the same amount of time as the Q0. Why would I produce anything other than my best?

Because higher qualities cost more to produce.

Why should I pay more to produce Q11 wood when I only need it for expantion? There are some goods people want to produce lower qualities of to save money. (Or to make money in the case of contest products.)

Also, even when any quality may do, you can't mix two batches of the same material of different qualities. Q0 is the most common in the market, so it's easy for a buyer to get q0 material from more than one seller.
