I am curious about the research buildings, I have not invested in expanding any of mine, or building additional buildings, because I felt it would be something I wouldn't really need in the future, once my research is complete. As I research higher, I am finding that it takes much longer for the 2 scientists to do their work, but they will eventually do it. At what point should I consider expanding, or should I consider it? Is there a long-term advantage to this expansion, or am I just going to invest in expanding these buildings to save time getting to the highest quality level? And what happens then? When I have researched all that can be researched, what can I do with that building?Tycoon: "Maybe it would pay out for you if you build another plantation research center? It seems as if you emphasize on food and plantation also in the future. So you can expand one of it while researching in the other one."

Investing in more research centers?
From another thread...
The resarch time will rapidly going up the higher your resarch level will get. We are not talking about hours or days, we are talking about weeks and months. The only way to decrease the time is by employing more scientists, which needs expanding.
As the kapitools aren't avaible in english (yet), here is a comparison for the total time needed resarching from level 0 to level 20 in the red area:
In a building with 2 scientists you need 735 days, 16 hours.
In a building with 10 scientists you need 147 days, 15 hours, 52 minutes
That is quite a difference you get for only 80 sq.m. The higher the level you want to resarch the more scientists you need to keep the time in a reasonable amount.
RC are probably the buildings that will grow the fastest. You probably should consider expanding when you feel the time for the next level is to high and you have enough money to expand the RC.
If you don't need a RC anymore you will probably have reached the level of manager and so you can sell it to another player. Depending on the type and the size you can get quite a nice sum out of it.
Resarch is expensive, because you will be expanding your RCs a lot, but it pays off in the long run. The only question is when to begin. If you begin to early you have not enough money to keep up the resarch/expanding-cycle, to late and you will waste time.
But of course there is always the possibility to not resarch on your own. With buying high quality materials and later buying resarches from other player it is possible to produce high quality goods without ever investing in RC. Like you like to say, there are always different ways to do things.

When you sell it, do you sell the levels of quality researched too? And if so, does that mean you lose that research level?

As you quoted my post, I just wanted to explain my "background" for this.
I have at least 2 research buildings for the respective groups. With this I can either expand one of them while researching in the other one or I am able to research 2 products at the same time. This makes me more flexible and in some cases I am able to reach a higher quality of the end product.
The plantation and food&beverages RCs have lots of different products. It would take to much time to be able to compete with your quality and expand so that you can research faster.
After having bigger research centers (at about 8k or 10k m2) I will sell e.g. the mines&wells RC, because there you research just a few products. I can use the lot for this building better for a shop or a production building. (later on the restriction of buildings will really be an issue...)
And you can sell the centers separately from the researches. But if you sell the research, you will loose it. And a company buying a research will loose it's former research level (so if it has research q20 and would buy q19, this company will have q19).

There is a special market for building and technologies, but only manager can access this market. Thanks Tycoon, and is there a special building to purchase to sell other buildings, or how is this type of selling done? (I'm assuming it's way down the road.)
But any manager can sell a building or a resarch to anyone else with sending them a contract. So normaly this is done through the forum. Manager A says "i sell this building for X", player B says "ok i buy it" and A sends B the contract.
If you look at the faxes people that buy gas pay a certain amount per additional quality. Probably they want to make more profit with higher quality gas, so they should be able to get more than that in the gas station. How much more can you sell your product (tru the selling building obviously) for a gas Q0 and a gas Q1 (with the rest of the variable remains same)?
But the best way to find out would be testing yourself. I assume you are producing and selling your own gas. Then just for testing purpose buy some high quality gas of the market and experiment with the price to see at which price you get a good selling time.
Just wanted to add sth to the post of MagicMagor:
if you want to sell your building, click onto it and on the right side you see: sell building (at the top). If you reached the Manager lvl, you will see then the different options how to sell: to the system, on the market or via direct contract to another user.
Please note: if you sell your building on the market, there won't be the fee of 10% commission.

Did tot of doing that MagicMagor, but i already stuff my 3 puny gas station to full load right before i see this post. Will do that in about 1/2 day more, then i can play a bit. As of now, my next building (and yes i am doing gas and controlling most of the cost) i am considering to fully control it (by building a power plant) or a research center. Hence, the Q asked, to at least gauge some idea how fast i can earn the money back.
