Research and quality

I see that I can research gas quality, and that I can also research or buy oil upgrades. How does researching gas quality affect the quality of gas versus buying higher quality oil?

oki ... i have NO idea about the wording u used ... but ill try and explain everything ...

u need power to create oil ... since power is only ever Q0, u need 2 quality researched to create Q1 oil. (qOIL + qPOWER)/2 = Total Q
for Gas, u need oil and power. therefore, u need Gas quality research and oil quality to be at least 3 (avg), to produce Q1 gas. (qGAS + qOIL + qPOWER)/3 = Total Q

u cannot produce gas quality 1 unless u have at least gas quality 1 researched. regardless of the quality of oil u possess. (im pretty sure)

This isn't the case in the german version, so i doub't that it holds true here.

Quality of Gas is: "Quality of Gas resarched" + "Quality of used oil" + "quality of power(which is 0)" / 3 (always rounded down)

So to produce Gas of quality 1 the sum of your gas-resarch and the used oil hast to be 3 or greater.
But to produce oil in quality 1 you have to resarch oil quality 2, because producing oil consumes power, which always has quality 0.
Resarching gas is at the beginning, the cheapest way to get better qualities, though you have to build a RC first. As the resarch time increases, increasing the quality of the oil becomes important to further improve your gas. Wether you produce and resarch the oil yourself or if it is better to buy high quality oil on the market depends on your strategy and on the market prices.

Resarch is expensive but it's a long-time investment and it affects all of your factories, so the more goods you can produce, the higher the benefit of resarching.
