This is another suggestion.. i think its nice to have natural disasters like drought, earthquake, pest etc..
Example
1. Drought-
Effect/Fax announcement: "Due to excessive heat in Congo for the last few weeks, wells and farms will produce 25% lesser."
2. Earthquake-
Effect/Fax announcement: "Due to the earthquake this morning in Saudi Arabia.. mines will be able to produce only 50% of its production capacity.
3. Pest-
Effect/Fax announcement: " Because of the Foot and Mouth disease in Mali, the production cost of poultry and meAT product in Mali will be tripled for the next 5 days.
hehe

It would be funny but I don't think people would like that. The would rely more on chance then on how much you produce. Some cuts on production would hurt the people just producing that product and some people that produce lots of products wouldn't mind as much as the ones that rely on that product for their daily income.

I think this is great because it can affect the prices of products.. like what happend in contest.. and the people that will be most affected are the big players coz they will get there raw materials at a higher price.. and small players will just need to increase there prices to cover the lost in production. there can be other effects not only in the production. it can create temporary inflation to the game. hehe
there should also be good natural events to boost production such as. "due to the good weather harvest will be better, a miner struck a unexplorered mineral reserve so the production will be increase, or it can be based on the time period example its Haloween demand for candies will be tripled for the week. or a plague hit france demand for drugstore products is expected to increase. hehe

Who would be hurt are the people without reserves. Such a short-term price shock would send prices up briefly, maybe get some lingering higher market offers bought up. But since production goes back the next day, anyone with a decent supply should be able to ride it out.
Incidently, how exactly would this work? Any productions starting that day are lower? Decrease stuff ending then? Production already in process is modified? (And is 12 hours of production modified by as much as 7 days worth?)
Events already exist on a company level. That's probably the closest we're going to get. I wouldn't mind more factors playing with the market, but this just seems too minor and awkward to work.

you can't compare this to the contest, because contest allows the small companies to earn some money from the big ones, but with the disaster noone would earn money, if you produce 50% of your usual production, you have to double the price to get the same profit and noone would buy it for that price
the only thing that would happen is, that all products on market for reasonable price would disappear, than people would use their reserves and then switch to other production until the disaster is over
or the ones that produce the raw materials will have to sacrifice 50% of their profit, because 50% is better than nothing

it could be a good idea to so
this way the game will not "stay" a steel/gas game (like it tented to approach....)
this kind of "plague" already exist in the game (flood in the warehouse when you are a trader for few days, steel and advertisement for free)
i think this should be a GREAT idea

=> orval : i can't remember where, but i have seen that kapiland (in german version) is now a "steel/gas" game (where nearly everybody sell steel or gas), so doing like this (by reducing production of these units (and other)) should stop this "way of life"

Alright but unlike most players think steel and gas are far from the most profitable way in this game, I don't know about the German one since I never played it

The math is the same here, even if the trend isn't as lopsided. (yet)
