How about having "Finished" auctions cleared from the page so that only those which are running are displayed as its hard just to see which item you want and if its "live" or a "dead" one??

The old ones are there, that users can see which starting prices for a product had been choosen or also other things.

If a auction is dead, you can see this symbol Image instead of this:
