You guys are acting like American cars are junk by accident or something.

Planned obsolescence
ensuring that something becomes obsolete: a policy of designing and making products that quickly become outdated or wear out, so that they must be replaced

Built-in obsolescence (UK)
is the conscious decision on the part of a manufacturer to produce a consumer product that will become obsolete and/or non-functional in a defined time frame.

I think that American car makers produce purposely defective merchandise so that you will have to get your car fixed, so you will have to buy replacement parts, which they also make.
Or you will give up and buy a new car.

I don't know how things work in Europe but in America nobody buys a car for life. If they buy it new, then they drive it for about 5 years till the warrantee expires, then trade it in on a new car. They bring in their old car which they give to the car dealer for a reduction in the purchase price of a new car.

As for myself, I've only owned two cars.
One was a Plymouth Horizon, which is small and boxy but ran great, until I wrapped it around a telephone pole.

The other was a Ford Tempo, which was crap.
It was used, I only paid $700 for it but had to spend $7000 in about six months just keeping it on the road so I could get back and forth to work.
Eventually I ended up selling it for scrap for $45.

I myself am not rich, nor am i one of those guys who drive with their hands down their pants at the sheer enjoyment of driving.
If I get another car it will probably, what we call in America, a "Winter beater", so old rusted out used car that will only cost $200 but will get you to work and back for a year or two, which is all I need.

I suppose the problem is that some people buy cars as a status symbol to show off to the neighbors, to keep up with the Johnson
