realm

When an innocent question 'is a realm is dead because of low amount of faxes' faces a speedy thread lock, you certainly know something fishy goes on. What, the matter of discussing the faxes is now illegal? Even if there is such a rule (where?), pearlbay, why don't you go into the contest trade section and enforce the rule listed there on very top that the context product should not be explicitly named? Would be so much more of use for everyone.

I also do not understand all the mess about '40 realms' and all this stuff. The pictures and other static resources are already separated into a different domain (supply.upjers.com; although that hosting of that subdomain sometimes shows extremely low performance delaying page loads for dozens of seconds, making the german kapilans interface quite unusable - on the other hands, the 'old' interface used at english servers is structured much better in this regard - if loading images turns out to be slow, every web page is immediately usable (all links clickable etc) anyway).

The truth is, modern software and hardware technologies allow easily serving at least 10m users like upjers players on the same server (and I am talking here about something like i7, not the overpriced useless Xeon stuff). Much more if majority of accounts are dormant (which is to be expected for web service like that). So things like 40 servers, or opening 2 servers at once now and then, indicate that upjers could really enjoy a serious programmers upgrade, making things better both for business owner, for servers administrator(s), and of course for users.

Granted, when upjers just started and had just few servers then hiring a cheap Pretty Home Page (PHP) programmer was a clever move; but now with hundreds servers and growing, either upjers starts looking toward better programming code, or there will be no no real future.

P.S. I am not just thinking or putting in the worthless $0.02 here. I am programmer working with high performance data processing for years, so I know for sure.

P.P.S. Having said all that, I must, absolutely must admit that upjers 3d and web designers are absolutely astounding. Running a real big bunch of rather complex games and updating them from time to time and adding new ones, they ensure nice visual experience without causing large traffic, making upjers games stand out of the crowd. That's surely an asset any business owner would be enlighted to have, and a working team everyone would be proud to be part of. Keep on!

Hi Moon Transport Corp,

I did not close the thread because I thought the topic was illegal - if it had been, which of course it wasn't, I might have just removed it entirely - but because the topics raised (in both of the player's posts) had already been repeatedly talked about and replied to before.

I could have also just referred to the other threads, but I generally take the time to reply even to issues raised before, without forwarding the players to the respective topics, because it is important to me, that everyone feels their questions are addressed. But if the topics have already been discussed and responded to, closing the threads is a completely normal administrative approach, nothing more than that. I am sorry if it came across differently.

Regarding the issues you raised here from the technical side: Pardon me if I refrain from entering into this discussion, as this is really not my field of expertise. ;)

I mentioned the 40 realms simply to say that with having several realms or game worlds to choose from, new players generally take the latest ones rather than the older ones - so you'd always have more registrations on the higher servers, than on the lower ones - that's all I wanted to point out here, and it is indeed true. Now whether there is a need to have x-many servers or not is a different issue, but as I said before, but that wasn't part of my argument at any rate.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and I'll pass them on of course; constructive criticism is of course important in every business. And of course we are always striving to become ever better, and to move along with the times and the demands. That's why are also always looking for dedicated programmers in our headquarters here in Germany. :)

Thank you also for your kind words about our 3D and web-designers, we are indeed proud ourselves about their work, and I think they'll enjoy hearing this also from someone who obviously knows their way around in this line of work. So thank you for those comments.

Anyway,

new players generally take the latest ones rather than the older ones
That was one of the most confusing part of my experience with upjers games... as a total newbie I came to the molehill empire, it had 5 servers at the moment. And so, to begin registration process I had to choose one... based on WHAT? Honestly, I was mostly inclined to just go away, then decided to just pick the 3rd, 'the middle one' - or course few weeks later when I understood the game mechanics and the trends it results in, it became clear that I'd better choose the fifth server and had greater game experience - but I was not really in mood restarting the game (and then I abandoned molehill empire as I anyway found myfreefarm much better balanced, having nicer graphics, and overall cared better - and well, you have to choose something not everything, in order to keep the time spent on the games reasonable).

On the other hand, with english kapilands I had deliberately chosen realm 1, and don't regret that: when I started playing about 17 months ago, both realms already were non-fresh, so I figured out as s small player I will have more nice niches, neglected by huge players, on the older server, than on the middle-aged server. And that approach, as far as I can see, still stays true - new players on realm 1, while not numerous, certainly have their unplanned advantages (which I will not be shouting aloud about, just not to spoil the fun for the new players). But here, the situation was (and is) pretty straightforward: if there are no fresh servers, you can not choose one.

So, instead of that hacky and oldish concept of multiple independent servers, lets invent something new and fresh instead, suitable for the second decade of the XXI century... maybe not something totally ideal (a new decade come, and will bring new approaches anyway) but something the users will have joy exploring (or other users will have joy not bothering about at all)... for example, automatically start a logical subserver every 3 or 6 months, and instead of asking a player the server number, during a transitional period ask if they would like to engage in a cut-throat competition on a latest subserver (which might be kinda empty in the beginning), or have a nice game on a previous subserver (which is going to be well developed, but players on average still being rather small). So, players in the different subservers are mostly isolated, but not totally - while don't let them globally trade the coin-purchased status items, for example? And then after reaching certain size or level (and likely already having satisfied some of the ambitions being the best, largest, etc), the player would get a privilege (but not obligation!) to move out of the current subserver to any older one to face older players and thus stronger competition, including the oldest subserver (which with time will become one of the most popular), where real fans of the game will eventually be gathering and enjoying the game together, instead of being spread in rather small amounts among a number of servers.

Indeed, stuff like that would be nearly impossible to implement with the hacky software technologies stuck in the last century, or with hardware like Pentium-II or Pentium-III for example, slow RAM, or with 10Mbit/s network cards... but fortunately, it's 2011 outdoors, and information technology evolves so fast! The modern epoch bears so many social problems (well, which times don't?), but why ignoring the advantages it provides? Let's use them!

And sure enough, congregating realms is not something rarely asked - the global competition' of myfreefarm for example (which was greeted highly enthusiasticly by players, but then most became less happy seeing that they are not anywhere as truly global as modern technology allows) indicates upjers realizes the trend.

Congregation among different languages, too - why myfreefarm have different servers for U.S., U.K., Australia, and New Zealand - what, those people would have major problems communicating in-game? Ridiculous, I thought I was laughed upon when I first heard about that! Even if those servers have to be physically separate for stupid (but not necessary avoidable, alas) financial or legal reasons, why don't they maintain a distributed database of market offers and IGMs? Even putting the English aside, there are many bi- and multilingual persons in the modern world, and lately more often than not the common language is not English at all - I was amazed when the first Brazilian I was chatting with knew Esperanto very well - and it then turned out that despite we knew few languages each, Esperanto was our only common language! Very nice indeed. So, with users marking which language they understand (with initial setting there depending on which domain name they used to register for the game), the online game would be so much larger and nicer place to be at, and even players without a common language could trade with each other, all enjoying a really REALLY active market. OK, strictly speaking there are also few automatic translator over there, but generally the automatic translation quality is still so poor that it mostly causes misunderstanding - but wouldn't we all like to live in a world with fewer communication barriers anyway, staying each unique and interesting in a distinct way?

Any way, please don't consider my post as just another couple of proposals. I really don't like to be handled nice and receive a fine answer, and then

Should also say - anyone wanting to start a new account in new realm - why don't you go NOW and open an account at german welt6 (kapilands.eu)? Granted, not everyone knows the language, but well, I don't really know it too - just few words and no real understanding of grammar, but that's just the same game of kapilands we all know and love, all the same prices and familiar production chains and the same product icons and so on, so with just the minor help of online translators everyone could easily get account working and begin producing stuff and trading on the market (as practice shows, many people there know other languages too, so finding a good long-term contract partners is not difficult at all).

And while that's just a newer version of kapilands as we see it here, improvements available there are nice indeed. A whole group of new products, and new hardware and flowers shop to sell them, the biodiesel that certainly makes better experience and brings the much needed diversity for the numerous gas sellers, sorting of similar buildings by the time they finish the current operation, and sure enough a whole lot of active players so you never hit an empty market

agreed, they as a company need to stop making the excuse that it is to unprofitable for a new server or updates. It's basic, if it is not economically viable, you rework it till it is or cut it loose. of course, i'm not saying shut down kapilands, I would rather see it improved.

i play from my phone, which is long and tedious, but i love this game, i can't play the new graphics "intensive" kapilands, and wouldn't anyway.

My point is - you have loyal players and a brilliant platform for <limit reached>

advertising, so why not use it?

and as for any server not being adaptable to accept new code, that is rubbish, php is made to be easily editable.

I agree with everything you are saying. Cannot seeing kapilands getting a revamp though, which is disappointing.
