People only think of profits now rather than down the road. (When I started out producing wool and pullovers the profit was horrible. Now instead of making 200 profit each pullover I am pulling down 600+.) Take one of those "lost" items, invest in research and sales. In time you might be pulling in the big bucks. ;)
i agree. i did some calculations on some of the items i sell and if the infrastructure of my grocery had as much invested in it as my furniture store the profit would be very close.

comparison based on my sales in my stores.

based on market value.
chairs Q9 89.1c/m2/24hrs
apples Q11 116c/m2/24hrs
based on my prod. costs
chairs Q9 320c/m2/24hrs
apples Q11 168c/m2/24hrs

Azer, what's your floor/factory space ratio? According to my estimate, pullovers are a passably profitable business and you can make a good profit per pullover - but only at the cost of a lot of sales space, making ROI mediocre. In any case, pullovers are several times as profitable as the standard Kapi product (fruit, meat, monitors, bread, etc.) For them, it's impossible to make big bucks even with Q20 and monster sales space.

Textile Stores:
Total m2: 162000
Available m2: 91000

Textile Factories:
Total m2: 80000
Available m2: 40000

All textiles such as pullovers, leather jackets and leather gloves all take time to sell. (5 to 7 days for a full store.)

if you have 100 power plants with 32k qm in red you will produce 4billion power a day... for 0,03 caps... so you make 0,14 caps profit per unit power... so that you make 560million caps profit over all on one day... with 100 FULL expanded buildings!!!
not very much...

And that is why most large players switch to selling their self produced goods in shops or buying from other people and selling in shops. This is much more profitable.
