make the forum more popular

Post by Guest » 06.10.2007, 14:30

could we make the forum a little bit more popular?

I am buying oil for 42 caps here - and ingame lots of people are selling the oil for only 40

so I think here could be more traffic. has somebody got any idea? perhaps the team - with the help of the f*** b** in the offices?

Selling for 42

I've been doing a fair bit of thinking on this particular subject.

In one of my opinions - The newspaper does a great job at advertising the forum (this maybe subliminal). It's a really quick read but reasonably good when it appears/could get better. It's hard work by a couple of people to get it into HTML. It's even harder to do the creative writing.

More of you should submit articles but keep them non-fiction. Just write a few little paragraphs about what's been going on in your company/real life/mind. That will make more work of the HTML writers but it will do them and the newspaper good. :P Even better is to write your articles in HTML format. Give it a go, it's good experience and not hard. Not harder than emoticons .

Most people don't want to read/work too hard in order to achieve success. That said however, everyone wants a decent reward for putting in the extra work they feel they do, that's just competition. Some people do a lot of work compared to others. :?

This why the newspaper is/will be short compared to the forum. The forum is a lot of reading. If new players/readers have too much trouble getting what they want from the forum, they may give it up.

Maybe the trade section (Realm 1 - Trade) could go up. Above the FAQ's or even General Stuff. Announcements should be on top. It's a hard call. In my opinion the trade section is the game :? . (All about the Game) is the trade section.

With all/some of the resources the newspaper account has been getting, maybe we could have a few forum contests. The newspaper could run the main contest every two weeks or so, but run a *%&$Forum Mini Contest$&%* every day/week.

Maybe changing the Forum icon in game will bring players here a bit more. I used to be a butcher. It's all about sign writing which I was never good at  .

Just put a small 2-line ad into the left side box - below phone, market, etc. icons.

something like "For auctions and trade opportunities check out kapi forum[link] " would be nice.

There already is a button for forum, but I guess people do not click on that because they don't realize that they can do much cool stuff in the forums.

The newspaper is fairly well read (in comparison to the forums, at least). To bring more people to the forums, an option would be to have a dedicated person in the newspaper team reading the forums, and pointing out the interesting / most active / noteworthy discussions on the forums for each week, and linking them. Basically, putting a link to something captivating, and writing a short note about why it's captivating, hopefully making people want to go read it for themselves =)
If you really look at it, over a week worth of posting, there are some quite interesting discussions here and there... and even on weeks I didn't deem there were "lill jewel" threads, there has always been a "popular" one breaking the 2 or 3 page worth of posts (i.e. which other people deemed interesting enough to join in and post into).

I don't think that 3 pages of product sales would be a best seller captivating the audience, so it wouldn't neccesarly serve the more specific goal Dwarf seems to want to achieve. But it would certainly help "making the forum popular" in the general sense.

Along the same line, I think the pools published in the newspaper, with weekly votes on the forums were already a step in that direction. Rather than commenting on the forum events, it directly created the event, which is a good approach too, I think. But I also think that the followup on these pools weren't always fully exploiting the topic's potential in the newspaper's next issue (particularly, that pool about help with selling in stores, to NPCs). In the long run, I feel it turned out to be detrimental to the whole "event" feel, and belittled it. Especially when on the side, there were other events and discussions just spouting on their own and captivating the forum audience in a more natural way =) When it's done week after week, the whole "let's create the event" thing feels a bit artificial in comparison.

Good point soul systems, good point!

I would also suggest dedicating at least one page from newspaper for collection of my posts from the forum - its pure wisdom. Pure gold, I'm tellin' ya all.

If that means we won't have to trip over them in the forums, then I'm all for it!
