I have just figured out how to get the Q up after buying it but why do people do it what does it get you?

As all status symbols, animals, too, bring you reputation, Higher level animals will let you rise up in the statistics. If you click on the Statistics, you'll find an entry that shows all animals / their owners ranked by their quality.
