Interesting discussion. In my opinion it is one continent, but the classification on this is not clear. Some say it

In my aunties encyclopedia Britannica it says there are 5 continents (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australasia and the Americas)
However, shes had this encyclopedia since I was a kid - so continent thinking has probably moved on since then!

From wiki:
[quote]A continent is one of several large landmasses on Earth. They are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria, but seven areas are commonly reckoned as continents

Ha!! You saying that is an insult to everyone in 'The Americas' that don't live in the United States!!! You're basically saying "We don't want to be clumped together with those inbreds!!"
Think of me I'm from the UK - and I'm clumped together with the bloody French!!!

No, No, No. I love my continent and the countries that are in it. There are more people in South America don't want to be grouped together with North America then vis versa. However, North and South America are two different continents and need to be respected for that.
It isn't "The Americas" in the poll, it is "America". Two different things as has been said before.

North, Latin, and South America are three very seperate continents.
South America by technical definition now due to the Panama canal.
North and Latin America due to massive cultural differences.

Let me put it this way...
If you wish North and South America to be one continents then there is no such thing as Europe and Africa. They are both connected to Asia are they not?
