Smoking will cause decline in IQ and thinking ability

The poorer mental function seen among alcoholics, many of whom also regularly smoke cigarettes, may be partially due to the long-term effects of nicotine, http://www.lookchem.com/cas-54/54-11-5.html
new research suggests.

"People who are also smokers are at a much higher risk," Dr. Jennifer M. Glass, of the University of Michigan's Addiction Research Center, said.

In her study, "cigarette smoking was negatively related to IQ and thinking," she said.

This finding may seem counterintuitive , since many smokers attest to feeling more alert and focused after smoking. Indeed, research shows that improved mental functioning is one of the immediate effects of nicotine exposure. Chronic smoking, however, is known to have the opposite effect.

Studies show that up to 87 percent of alcoholics smoke cigarettes. Yet, few studies have looked into cigarette smoking as a factor that might explain the cognitive deficits reported among alcoholics.

To investigate that association, Glass and her colleagues examined brain function among 172 men from the same community, including 103 men who abused alcohol.

The team found that men with higher scores on the lifetime alcohol problems scale (LAPS) and those who reported a higher number of pack-years of smoking both had lower IQ scores.

Upon further investigation, the researchers found that smoking also appeared to be independently associated with weaker verbal and visual-spatial reasoning.

Thus, though smoking did not account for all of the decreased neurocognitive functioning observed among the alcohol abusers, it did seem to account for some of the effects, the report indicates.

I take it your an Ex-smoker
only ex-smokers preach on the benefits of not smoking.
Like Born again Christians preach on the benefits of finding Jesus..
hell I did not even know he was lost.
Everyone in the world knows by now that smoking is not a good thing to do to your lungs or brain..but God gave them freedom of choice so who am I to interfere ????

I take it you're a smoker. Only smokers who can't/won't quit espouse the philosophy of freedom of choice which, if smoking is chosen, actually leads to many negative impacts on ech individual, many of whom started smoking without being fully aware of the negative impacts (it's not been so long that 'everyone' knows smoking is bad for you.

I'm trying to quit (and now after 2 years have finally managed to get somewhere with it) and for those 2 years, and a few before, wish I had never started and the b*******s who peddle nicotine were brought to task. I niavely entered the world of smoking and when awareness finally settled in (along with a bit of wisdom and maturity that comes with age) it was too late for an easy fix. Nicotine is (possibly after heroin) the hardest of drugs to quit. I've managed to give up other things with only a little hardship but all at the first attempt.

It's funny, suicide is a personal choice as well, but would you advocate that?

And before I get lumped in with born again christians, i peddled this mind set whilst I was still a smoker. It's not non-smokers who preach, just those who are aware and wiser. And anyway, smokers preach freedom of choice (although possibly not such strong advocates if someone chooses to punch you as an act of freedom of choice) which amounts to the same thing. Perhaps you didn't know Jesus was lost because you've always had him with you :)

yes I am smoker and where I live the only place its stll allowed is outside
at least 3m from any door.
I really dont advocate that people smoke..I discourage the younger generation from smoking but at the same time I really have no wish to quit.
Have you ever thought about the "stuff" that governments have banned the sale of because it dangerous for people?? Why then have they not banned cigarettes??....because they Tax them to the hilt and make too much money. How about Alcohol another product that is taxed heavily,is a "killer" and is still sold.
I dont smoke in the vicinity of non smokers..I smoke outside when visiting people.
And dont get me started on the benefits of suicide to society

I've smoke since 13. I'm not proud of it, but I enjoy it, so I have no desire to stop. Personally, I think that there are more toxic pollutants in the air that we actually breath then in cigarettes. ( especially living in the city) I came to this conclusion since most of my family growing up smokes. I say "smokes" because all but my grandfather, (whom died in his sleep at 94) are sill alive and kicking in their late 70's and early 80's. They don't hack, they don't have cancer, and they hardly ever even visit the doctor except for their routine checkups. Tobacco has been here in the United States before we were even here, leave it alone....don't give it to kids, but leave it alone....it helps pay this country's bills. If you don't like being in a restaurant that allows smoking...GO SOMEWHERE ELSE

You started smoking when you were drunk??
Or did your parents start smoking when you were drunk???

Don't understand what you mean.

I have been smoking for many years, I am not quitting but sometimes I wish I could, I am definitely a smokeaholic.

Even though I am still alive, I can feel that I have smoked for so long when I for instance want to play and run with our dog,
I keep up for about 3 minutes before I have to stop to slow down my heartbeatrate.
I am more quickly out of breath then I should be, not as fit as I could be,
And things like that sometimes worry me..
(Hey, that sounds like a song almost, lol)

so even if it is your own business I would really not reccomend it to anyone to start smoking.
And when I think about all the money I have spent buying cigarettes..
OMG!!!
I could have bought a house with that money, and I mean a mansion!!
